“Dispassionate objectivity is itself a passion, for the real and for the truth.”

(Abraham Maslow)

I don’t normally have a great deal of detail in the background of portraits. The background of a painting is vitally important. It is the earth a work stands upon. For this painting I want to established a variation in color and tone that helps to add depth and suggests the existence of a world outside the waiting room of the MultiModal Center. I have always admired the view through windows in Matisse’s painting of interiors.

My goal is to explore more of these peeks of the exterior from the interior more in subsequent paintings when it works for the painting. That is one of the interesting challenges in designing the image, what belongs and what doesn’t. It is all about composition which is what we call design in painting. To compose is to design. You bring all the elements and principles of  design together and build the truth of what you want to express.
